Launceston is Tasmania's second-largest city, with a population of about 68,000. It is also the third oldest city in Australia. The city is dominated by the Tamar River, and sits at the juncture of the North and South Esk Rivers. Its lovely sight, with grand Victorian houses nestling on hills above the banks is a sight to behold. Launceston Australia had once mainly utilitarian structures such as merchant warehouses and mills, which are now converted into museums, galleries or tourist attractions. As a result the city has many fine examples of colonial Victorian architecture: the 1870s and 1880s were prosperous times for Launceston, years of mineral exploration spurred on by the mainland gold rush. There was a boom in construction and a number of massive, dignified public buildings date from this period which were simply attached to Georgian structures.
In nutshell, Launceston Australia is a region combining rich cultural heritage with its galleries & museums, numerous vineyards & verdant agricultural lands, and a quiet wildlife haven of dense fern glades, national parks, dams & waterways, pristine beaches, and crashing waterfalls. As a leading gateway to Tasmania, the metropolis provides a perfect base to access nearby attractions including domestic parks such as Narawntapu, Cradle Mountain, Lake St Clair, Woolmers, Brickendon, Clarendon, the historic colonial villages of Evandale and Longford with their grand old farms and mansions. Before launching yourself into the beauty of the Tamar Valley, there are several local destinations worth visiting around Launceston; most notably is the well-preserved town of Evandale, just 20 kilometers from the city. If you're here in winter, you might consider joining the ski crowd who descend upon Ben Lomond National Park, southeast of Launceston; out of season, this is fine bushwalking country. Eating out in Launceston is a predominantly Anglo-Saxon affair, with pubs in particular offering decent meals. However, there are also a few excellent cafés and the odd ethnic place that are all worth a visit.
